Our 5000th Child, Celtic v Kilmarnock 24th September 2016

No amount of rain, and there was plenty, could put a dampener on Saturday. It really was a truly special day in the history of The Kano Foundation.

We kicked off the day with our annual bucket collection where a dedicated bunch of volunteers got soaked to the skin while helping us to raise over £8,500! Surpassing last year’s total by £1,000. It was made all the more difficult with the weight of rain water in the buckets adding to the many donations from our wonderful Celtic support.

We were also delighted to accept a cheque at half-time for £15,000 from our good friends Jokey and Lorraine who climbed Mount Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe, while raising money for us in the process. You can read all about their amazing achievement here. Thank you to Celtic FC for welcoming them onto the pitch at half-time with our Patron Tom Boyd.

And then there was this… Our 5000th child ‘over the turnstile’.

The lucky youngster was Caiden Mullan, who was attending the match with Ardoyne Youth Club from Belfast. He gave us a little interview that you can watch below.

When he returned to Holy Cross Boys Primary School in North Belfast on Monday morning, Caidan wore his 5000th kid scarf to school as he was still on a high from the weekend and he wanted to show his friends. At assembly that morning, the Vice Principal saw his scarf & Caidan was brought to the front of the school to tell the other pupils why/how he got the scarf, voucher etc. They clapped Caidan & some boys gave him a high five much to his delight!  The youth club has also displayed the 5000th flag in their club as a memento.

We were also joined by the energetic kids of St Peter’s Primary from Ardrossan who jumped about for most of the match, copying the standing section and making the most of it; Dumfries and Galloway Befriending Project; and our buddies from Dumbarton Utd and Celtic Boys Club who brought over 20 people between them to help out in the bucket collection beforehand – thanks bhoys and ghirls.

Be sure to visit our Facebook and YouTube pages for some photos and videos from Saturday and other matches.

These experiences and milestones can only happen thanks to your support and generosity! Thank you, again.

Now on to the next 5000…..
